A slipped, or herniated disc, can occur in any part of your spine, though it is more common in the lumbar region (lower back). Between each of the spine’s vertebrae is a small rubbery disc that acts as a cushion, absorbing stress on the spine. The disc has a soft center with a tougher exterior. A slipped disc occurs when some of the softer material leaks out through a crack in harder coating.

The herniated disc can begin to irritate nearby nerves. Though you may not experience any discomfort from this condition, it can lead to pain, numbness or weakness in one of your arms or legs. If you do experience symptoms the problem may be resolved with chiropractic therapy and without the need for surgery.

Causes of a Slipped Disc

Most commonly, a herniated disc is caused by the gradual degeneration of the bones connecting your spine, as you age. A slipped disc may also be caused by strain from lifting, or a traumatic injury.

Treatment for a Slipped Disc

The main aim of treatment for a herniated disc is to alleviate pain. For this reason, you treatment plan should be individualized to suit your level of pain and also the location of the slipped disc. Conservative treatments are recommended at the outset. One such treatment option is chiropractic therapy. Your chiropractor will use gentle manual manipulation to adjust and flex your spinal joints. This will stimulate the nerves and tissues surrounding the herniated disc and promote healing without causing you any discomfort. Chiropractic adjustments can often result in improved range of motion ad increased blood flow to the injured areas as well as pain relief.
